While a lot will depend upon the scale of the bathroom remodel, most can be completed within a month, and even as little as 3 weeks for a smaller project.

To help determine how long remodeling your bathroom will take a general contractor to complete, you can check the points below and answer the following questions:

What is the current state of your bathroom?

If your bathroom has a variety of problems with plumbing and wiring etc. then a remodel may take longer due to addressing these issues, and brining the bathroom up to relevant safety standards.

Will you use a general contractor?

Using a general contractor can help the remodel go more smoothly, since they will coordinate the various subcontractors and work to keep the project on track and in budget. They will also source the materials at the best price for you, which can be time consuming if you do it yourself.

Are any permits required?

You’ll need to obtain the appropriate permits from the city, and even if your general contractor takes care of this for you, the project can’t begin until they’re granted.

Here is an example of a timeline for the average bathroom remodel:

  • Pre-construction phase – 1 to 2 weeks

During this phase you’ll choose a general contractor, and they will go ahead and obtain all the necessary permits for the project.

While waiting for the permits to be granted, the general contractor will source and buy the materials needed to complete the project, each of will be discussed with you in detail before purchase.

It’s best to notify any neighbors that you have, that work will be getting underway in your bathroom soon.

  • Construction phase – 3 to 6 weeks

Any demolition work required will now commence, before any plumbing and electrical work is carried out.

While work is underway to remodel your bathroom, the city’s inspectors will need to visit to verify that it’s up to code, and while this step can delay proceedings, it’s a necessary and important step.

Once you’ve gained the relevant seal of approval from the inspector, the general contractors team can commence with the walls, flooring, bath, sink, toilet and connections etc.

In the final stages of the construction phase, the finishing touches will be added, such as décor and accessories.

  • Post-construction phase – 1 week

The final remodeled bathroom will be tidied up and cleaned thoroughly, before the general contractor performs a final walk through – with you – to ensure that everything is up to standard and how you expected it to be.

Having your bathroom remodeled is a relatively efficient and affordable home improvement, although, as with any home improvements, you can choose to buy luxury items which will bump the cost up, or stick to a smaller budget with economical materials and fittings.
