Home renovating has become increasingly popular not just in the U.S. but all over the world, with more and more people choosing to stay in their homes and transform them, rather than moving to another property. However, while it’s a great idea if your budget permits, there are certain things that must be carried out if the project’s to be a success, and here are 5 of the most important:
- Create a plan of action
Having a solid plan that walks you through every aspect of a home renovation from beginning to end, is the single most effective way to ensure that every step of the project goes smoothly, and remains both in budget, and on time. Take the time to create one before any work commences.
2. Set a strict budget
It’s so easy to let cost run away with you during a home renovation, but a strict budget that allows for flexibility and unforeseen costs or issues, can help keep everything on track.
3. Carry out research
From contractors and materials to fixtures and furniture, by taking the time to carry out plenty of research, you might be able to find some real bargains, or at least be in a better position to negotiate prices and shop around. Competition is fierce within the home renovation industry, so never settle for the first price you’re given, and don’t be afraid to shop around independently for the products and materials you need to complete the project.
4. Look for signs of subsidence
If you’re planning to extend your home either outwards or upwards, then you should check your property for signs of subsidence. While it doesn’t necessarily spell disaster, cracks that are wider than 3mm on the exterior, or cracks that appear to grow bigger from smaller ones, should be investigated by a construction professional.
If you do have a problem with subsidence, you’ll find it harder to get building insurance, and naturally, the problem will need to be addressed which will add to your budget, even if you may be able to claim it back on your insurance.
5. Get homeowners insurance and all relevant permits
An absolute must for anyone planning to renovate their home, homeowners insurance is essential and gives you the security you need against possible theft of materials. Permits must also be issued for safety purposes, and if you’ve hired a responsible renovation company, they’ll take care of all necessary permits for you.
While renovation products don’t typically involve major structural changes (this is found more in remodeling projects), there’s every chance that your project may change and morph into something entirely different as you go along, so being aware of all of the points above, is the best way to avoid nasty surprises and keep your project on track.
