Bathroom remodeling and renovation is always a popular improvement for homeowners to make, and when done well, can help significantly boost a property’s market value. But, while a good bathroom renovation can give a great return on your investment, many homeowners are not in a position financially, to even consider starting such a project.

However, with some smart money-saving tips, even the most cash-strapped of homeowners may find themselves able to at least upgrade some aspects of their bathroom, if they can’t afford to splash out on a full renovation:

  1. Become a BIYer

While becoming a DIYer isn’t recommended for all but the smallest of bathroom remodels, becoming a BIYer (someone who buys it themselves isn’t of doing it themselves) absolutely is. That said, some construction companies won’t allow their customers to buy any of the materials themselves, but if they do, it can help you save a bit of money (especially if you’re a great negotiator!).

2. Mix the old with the new

If there are some things in your bathroom that are still working perfectly well, or which are still to your taste stylistically, it might be worth mixing and matching some of them with newer, more modern items, to help preserve your budget. When carefully done, mixing and matching can be extremely effective.

3. Clean up your tiles and grouting

Floor and wall tiles can quickly bump up the cost of a bathroom renovation, so why not try cleaning your existing tiles up and redo the grouting before you write them off completely.

4.Give it a lick of paint

In terms of budget friendly but effective remodeling ideas, giving the chosen room in your home a fresh lick of paint, can help transform the space entirely. Whether you choose the same colour but paint over all of the faded, damaged or dirty bits, or go for a new color altogether, a new paintjob can reenergize a dull, tired bathroom.

5. Be wise about your flooring

With so many different styles of bathroom flooring available today, it can be easy to get carried away, and before you know it, you’ve blown half of your budget on it. However, with some careful consideration, you should be able to find some budget-friendly flooring that still does exactly what you want it to, but without the hefty price tag, such as swapping tiles for vinyl or laminate flooring. If your budget is really restricted, you may even be able to scrub up your existing flooring and place some attractive rugs over any areas that are damaged or faded.

6.Remodel in stages

If you can’t afford to renovate the bathroom in its entirety in one go, why not prioritise those aspects of the bathroom that are in desperate need of upgrading, and complete the renovation in stages? That way you can still achieve your dream bathroom, it’ll just take you a bit longer.

7. Choose your shower sensibly

It’s often the new tub or shower that bumps the cost of a bathroom renovation up, so try to be sensible when deciding upon what you’re going to upgrade to. Do you need a luxury shower that will mean other areas of the bathroom are neglected, or do you prefer to spend more money on a stunning vanity, and less on a functional shower or tub?

Bathroom renovations can get costly, but by being realistic about your budget and being prepared to keep some items, you can avoid going over budget while still increasing the value of your home.
