If your apartment is a little on the bijoux side, there are some tips and tricks that even the professionals use, which can help to make the entire space both look and feel, bigger.

To help create the illusion of space and roominess in even the tiniest of apartments, why not give these tips a go?

Use light colors on walls, and choose light colored furniture

It’s no secret that choosing lighter colors when decorating an apartment, can help to make it feel less confined, and look a lot roomier, not to mention inviting. Visually expand the rooms in your apartment by having light colors on the walls, and pair them with pastel furniture for a lighter, roomier effect.

When painting the walls a light color, make them the same color as the trims to help draw the eye up to highlight the ceiling, and make the space feel airier.

Where possible, and while it might seem counter intuitive, try pulling the furniture away from the walls; you might be surprised just how much bigger a room can be made to look and feel with this simple trick.

Strategically place large mirrors

Interior design experts are always telling us how mirrors that are strategically placed within a home, can reflect natural light and make a room appear much bigger than it really is.

Add artificial lighting

While most traditional apartments are illuminated from the ceiling, this can have the effect of making the corners of a room appear darker, and the room itself, much smaller. Instead, opt for some built-in spotlights in the ceiling which will illuminate any dark corners and make the ceiling seem higher, too.

Swap classic furniture for modern, built-in, multifunctional items

While you might love your existing, chunky, brightly colored or dark furniture, swapping it for something sleeker, lighter and with storage space underneath, will instantly make a room feel bigger. Consider folding furniture that can be extended when necessary, and stashed away to one side for everyday use.

Choose consistent flooring

You might love having different types of flooring in every room, but this can quickly make your entire apartment look smaller. Choosing uniform flooring, on the other hand, will help create a seamless sense of continuity, and the illusion of space.

Add some shelves

Shelves are a great way of adding a sense of scale and height to a room, and can of course, be very useful for storing items that might otherwise be taking up floor or surface space.

Forget drapes and rugs

They might be attractive from a décor stance, but rugs and drapes generally do nothing for small apartments other than make them feel cluttered and cramped.

Of course, if your apartment really is tiny, and nothing you do seems to make it look or feel any bigger, you might be able to have it remodeled to create more space? Talk to a local construction company to find out more about your remodeling options.
