The sink is one aspect of a kitchen remodel that can easily be overlooked, and yet where it’s positioned to within the space, is undoubtedly important. It might be that you need to leave the sink exactly where it is if you can’t afford to alter the plumbing, but if you do have the option to improve its location for convenience purposes, you should definitely consider it.
Here are some things to think about when remodeling your kitchen and deciding where the sink should go:
Reusing your existing plumbing
If you’re carrying out a remodel on a budget, you might be left with no option other than to reuse your existing plumbing, and doing so can save you a lot of money.
What you want to see when stood at the sink
There’s nothing worse than standing at the sink doing the dishes, staring at a blank wall. If possible, put your sink near a window or position it so that you can see the rest of the home as you toil away.
Positioning your sink central to a window
If you can place your sink in front of a window to benefit from the natural light, so much the better, but will it fit? With appliances and other items to fit in, make sure your sink doesn’t take up too much space under the window, and if possible, shift it to one side, ensuing symmetry is upheld at all times.
Is your sink area light and bright enough?
There’s a time and a place for ambient lighting, but it isn’t when you’re stood at the sink scrubbing the grill trays. Natural light is always a bonus in the sink area, but if you don’t have that, be sure to have enough electric lighting to clearly see what you’re doing.
Stand your dishwasher next to the sink
Dishwashers and sinks are born to be next to each other, and if your dishwasher has to be plumbed in on the opposite wall, for example, you’ll soon notice the inconvenience. When planning your remodel, do your utmost to ensure that the sink and dishwasher are cosied up to one another.
Allocate work zones
Creating different spaces in your kitchen is especially helpful if yours is a busy household with multiple people coming and going within the space at any given time. Think about where food prep is best carried out, where dining should take place, and leaving ample space for moving around in front of appliances etc.
Think about connecting with guests
If you can’t avoid being at the sink when guests are present, try to design a kitchen that allows you to maintain eye contact while at the sink. This might mean adopting a more open plan design, or positioning the sink on some sort of island.
